Sisko The Kid

Welcome

Sisko was born September 22nd 2000 in Fresno California. I had Sisko bred for the best hunting dog. It took about five years to get the parents I was looking for. Sisko’s father was an 85 lb pure bred chocolate lab. His mother was an 80 lb pure bred German short hair pointer.

These breeds are both awesome hunters and great family dogs. It was considered forbidden by most breeders to accept mixing these two awesome animals to come up with the best hunting dog that I could find.

When I did my research on what I was looking for, I found out that the creation of the German short hair in the mid 1800-century was done by mixing Old Spanish pointer and English foxhounds with various German scent hounds. The resulting low Slung short - legged dog was on the right track, but lacked beauty and a good nose. The English pointer was added for height and grace, and also improved the nose of the evolving German pointer.

This gave me the idea to breed the Beautiful Chocolate lab to an awesome German short hair pointer.” What an Incredible mix”. The blend came out better than I hoped for. Sisko has been the easiest dog I have ever trained. Great with kids, Protective, Unbelievable hunter, Smart, Good looking and one of my best friends.

When Sisko was six months old he got his first taste of birds. He was a natural at hunting the birds. The first thing he did was point. Later, as we did a little more hunting for ducks, he turned on the lab within him and started bringing back birds just as big as him.

At seven months old coming back from a hunting trip a tragic accident happened. An associate hunter of mine ran Sisko over with his jeep not once but twice. Under the front wheel and then under the rear wheel. When Sisko went under the rear wheel I heard a snap. My heart stopped for a moment. As I jumped out of the jeep, I loaded my handgun expecting the worse case scenario. I approached Sisko; He let out a cry for just a moment. I checked him out to realize he had a broken leg or hip. I grabbed him and jumped in to my land cruiser to take him to the closet vet. I had called my mother to find the best veterinary in the area possible. She had located some in my area name Robert A. Richardson, D.V.M. of Sacramento Veterinary Surgical Services, Inc. He took Sisko’s x-rays and had told me that there is a good chance that he could fix him but do to the injury he might not be the same. I then talk to Sisko’s doctor about the cost. My heart stopped again. He said between $ 5,000.00 To $10,000.00 dollars

I knew at that moment I could not afford that kind of money at the time, but I realized that I had the best dog I might ever have. The minimum I owed Sisko was a chance to survive and have a good life. The doctor told me that if the break to his femur were one eighth of inch up or down he would never walk the same. Nevertheless, I had to take that chance. Sisko had eight pins put into his right rear femur. A few months later I had all but one of the pins removed. I spent all of my time rehabilitating Sisko: from swimming to walking to running. It took me about two years to bring him back to full health. With some support from a friend name Ed (that has a nice piece of land in Truckee California at 6000 feet), I was able to run Sisko all summer long. After all of this I felt is was up to me to give the best life a person could give his dog.

So we have been hunting, four wheeling, sailing, hiking and every other outdoor sport we can think of. In the winter of 2004 I saw this dog jumping competition at Sacramento’s Cal expo at the International sportsman’s expo. All of my friends recommend me to give a try.

January 14th 2005 we went to Pomona California for a Splash Dog’s event. We took a third place over all with jumps about 18 – 19 feet. After that I was hooked. In 2005 we had competed in seventeen events.

Now my handler/training skills have been sharpened. It has given Sisko and I a huge opportunity and a job that I enjoy.
